The laptop should come with some of the connecting cables you’ll need. You may have to buy an S-video cable to run between your cable box or satellite control box. (cont)
Our desktop came with the RCA cable, the remote, the infrared sensor for the remote, and a jumper cable that plugs into the computer’s S-video port (the free end contains the S-video port for the DISH network controller and 3 RCA ports — left and right audio and video, which I don’t use since I’m useing the S-video). You really don’t have to use the infrared remote, if you prefer to use a mouse. Have fun!
I use DISH Network. You open Media Center (the MS app) and select Settings -> TV. Then let Media Center find your tuner (e.g. set-top box/receiver). Once that’s done, you answer a couple of questions, then use satellite/cable tuner to enter channel numbers so the Media Center infrared (IR) receiver can program the software to recognize the signal.
Can’t speak for other satellite systems, but DISH lets you set up a delayed AutoTune to automatically switch to the correct channel hours/days in advance, and record. For example, on Friday I programmed to record THC’s The Last Stand of the 300, re: the battle of Thermopylae, which aired Sat. evening. It recorded. I’m copying it to DVD now to send my son.
I’ve just uploaded a 2nd video with some supplementary info — primarily about the IR sensors and using the (satellite) tuner. It’s a video response to this one.
Not sure what you’re asking. You *can* watch TV at the same time you’re recording. However, with a satellite connection, you must watch the *same* channel being recorded. Doubt a splitter would change that, since the remote that controls the signal being received is also sending that same signal to the computer. If a splitter would let you record to VCR while watching a difference channel, it should also work for the Media Center recorder.
