Kai Media Center

Find the right Media Center

+++ pro
+ good picture
+ nice RF remote but it does look
cheap

— con
- extremely buggy software bundle

my little review of the ati tv tuner card. the hardware is great! the software sucks. you can get a cheap tuner with remote for 50 bucks elsewhere.
it does work in Vista also, but soooo slow when changing the channel

my impression, review, of the ATI 650 pci hd tv tuner card on windows XP. for $90, im happy with it :) you can get a cheaper HD tuner from Kworld for $50 but you’ll need a good software to use the hardware.

+++ pros
1. great picture! hd channels are super clear.
2. easy to setup n use.

—cons
1. minor bugs in the software.
2. i still cant get EPG
3. cant get the free remote control offer
4. doesnt turn off after a scheduled recording
5. automatically plays DVD when u insert a disc, very annoying!

it does work in Vista without downloading drivers. however, it seems Vista is buggy with the card. when changing channels, theres a HUGE delay. also, the video is jerky. therefore, i am back on windows XP now.

UPDATE!
i finally got the free remote! had to pay shipping though.

    This would work well with MythTV on linux.

    I haven’t seen any Linux drivers for it yet. Personally I use the HD-5500 from pchdtv (developed for Linux - native to the kernel). Having 2 tuners seems overkill for the quality of programming available for me on OTA HD ;) I just can’t find 2 things I need to record simultaneously.

    I just got the TV wonder 650. It does an excellent job at capturing from an analog source such as a VCR. But the Catalyst Media software it comes with is garbage. It looks like it is made for, and designed by kindergarten kids. The software from ATI’s older cards (TV wonder VE) was great. The old software will not work the TV Wonder 550/650. Great card for capturing VHS tapes. No HDTV in my area yet, so I can’t test that.

    So if your pc is turned on, this will work like a normal tv if you plug your tv coax into the card?

    yes. i feed the antenna in for watching over the air broadcast. surprisingly, theres a lot of free HD channels now.

    First: Conglatulations.! Your video is very good. :)
    This is a excelente tv card. i have on of this. Saddly i´m in Brazil, so i cant use everything that the card offer me… But, the videocapture is great!

    One thing: i already have other ati cards (tv turners), and the best software for this is ATI MULTIMEDIA CENTER. Even with all problems, the software have more features and configs to video capture.
